Herreshoff Double Paddle Canoe

 04 Jan 22:

The Herreshoff Double Paddle Canoe design has caught my eye recently, I believe this is a 16 footer by L. Francis Herreshoff from his book Sensible Cruising Designs

LFH states that the double paddle canoe gives the most fun for the money of any type of boat, and that it is his favorite form of aquatic sport.

14 foot plans are ordered from Mystic Seaport, at a minimum they will be fun to look at. And maybe we'll build one to see if he was right.

  1. I have one of LF's double paddle canoes built from his 1933 plans in 1967. It was built by a Mystic Conn Dentist, boat builder and wood carver, VF Masin. I purchased it from his son yesterday. I also have another that was the last made from a mold of LF's dugout canoe now in the Mystic Seaport museum. That one is laid out in the 1960s in fiberglass from molds of the 1930 dugout canoe. I purchased that one years ago from the guy (Benjamin Franklin “Biff” Martin) that once owned the molds, which are now destroyed. As a youngster, Biff's father was the Marblehead harbormaster and he used to carry LF's kayaks out of the building next to the Harbormaster's office for LF when he wanted to go out for a paddle. According to Biff, that was LF's source of exercise.
