Sunfish Old Style Rudder 1953-1971

Here is a good diagram of the parts for the Sunfish rudder system used from 1953-1971 in the wooden Sunfish, fiberglass Sunfish, Sailfish, SUper Sailfish and SUper Sailfish MKII. The wooden Sunfish and Sailfish series have shorter transoms, so the vertical plate is about 4 inches. The fiberglass Sunfish has a taller vertical plate due to its larger transom.

Summer Sailstice 2014 with Zip

Summer Sailstice...I'm just saying....

From SBR 4: Jun 2014 -

The original Sunfish came with a tiny daggerboard and elephant ear rudder, also a cloth sail. Today Zip is going to use a race cut Schurr Sail, Barrington daggerboard and 3rd generation rudder blade.

From SBR 4: Jun 2014 -

Heading out on Zip, our 1953 wooden Sunfish, hull number 13.

From SBR 4: Jun 2014 -

Trying to catch Zip on Madison, our photo ship.

From SBR 4: Jun 2014 -

Alcort envisioned that the boat would be launched with the rudder up, then swung down into latch plate once in the water.

From SBR 4: Jun 2014 -

From SBR 4: Jun 2014 -

Zip shipped a little water over the bow, and it ran into the cockpit.

From SBR 4: Jun 2014 -

Pumping the bilge.

From SBR 4: Jun 2014 -

Zip goes speeding by again.
