Why Small Boats?

04 Aug 18:

Currently reading Roger Barnes book' The Dinghy Cruising Companion which has a lot of stories and advice on small boat cruising. There are a lot of reminders in there as to why we like small boats, here are a few of the tidbits we have gleaned so far:
-We like small boats that pull their design from working craft, modest sail plan, sea kindly hull, stable.
-Priority is a boat that is a safe place to spend many hours afloat, sail and row with the elements vs beat into them.
-Sail plan is spread out vs up, for better stability. Close to wind sailing and speed are not priority, focus is a good balance of sail and oar and maybe motor.
-Sail plan that sets, handles, reefs and stows easily. Short spars, minimal rigging, small sails for a balanced sail plan.

Our Lugger meets all of these criteria!

We are only about halfway through the book, lots of good info to go. The book is well laid out, with many glossy photos.

  1. It's a fact that boats are used in INVERSE PROPORTION to their size...
