Nutshell Pram EXCUSE ME Daggerboard Trunk

30 Apr 22:

We started looking at plans for the daggerboard trunk and daggerboard, and noticed that the plans called for the daggerboard to be made out of 2 layers of 1/4 inch plywood. My brain remembered that we had daggerboards from early Alcort Sunfish that were close in size to the Pram daggerboard, but they are 3/4 inches thick. So I checked with Maynard, one of the design team for the Pram, to see if an ich here or there would matter, and he said it would be fine.

We used the new daggerboard to make sure we made the trunk wide enough front to back, the Sunfish daggerboard is 9 inches vs the design 8 inches, The Sunfish daggerboard is also 31 inches vs 28 a little extra daggerboard will be fine and it still will fit behind the aft seat when not in use.

Cut out the trunk sides with a circular saw.

Used the daggerboard to set the width for the trunk end posts, plus 1/8th inch.

We cut a small bevel on the top of the trunk bed logs, to help shed water to the bilge.

Mahogany is dusty, be sure to use PPE.

While the saw was out we cut slats out of teak, to be used for the seats.

Calibrated seat slat width gauge, 1/4 inch.

Coated the inside of the trunk with THIXO. It will also get a coat of paint.

Modern Art

 30 Apr 22:

I want to sneak these tables into a Modern Art Museum, I think they'd draw attention...Hints of Mondrian with a little Picasso splashed on...

Seriously, we were lucky to find these tables, the legs fold in and the table folds in half, they take up very little storage space.

Surprise for Skipper

 29 Apr 22:

Just between you and me, Skipper might be getting a cordless compact trim router for Mother's Day.

We like the corded version, but the cord can snag at inopportune times and cause a miscut. It also requires a power cord to be laid out, something we like to avoid if it is wet outside.

Mid Atlantic Station Tour

 28 Apr 22:

One year ago we had an empty backyard. Today it looks a little different.

The water is warming up, might be time to explore a few more areas in the Tidewater Region!

Sail Loft

28 Apr 22:

We don't leave sails outside, too tempting to the critters, mildew, etc... This batch lives in the garage, and some live in Skipper's closet. She hides sails everywhere.

Sail Ties

 27 Apr 22:

Skipper's Dad Capn Jack made some nice soft sail ties for the Lugger 40 years ago, from macrame cord. We'd like some more for the Armada and Skipper found some vintage cord that will work.

The macrame is a flat braid, and 3 strands woven together make a nice piece. The braid is stretchy so it will not abrade the sail. We braided 3 pieces and whipped the ends.

Pondering Trailering

27 Apr 22:

So we've been around trailed boats since the 1960s, and got spoiled during our time living on the waterfront from 2011-2021. Back to being trailer sailors, and we need to get ST. JACQUES set up to get the boat and gear down the road safely.

For short trips below highway speeds, a lot of gear can ride in the boat, but we want to make sure that the gear doesn't damage the hull, like this little anchor. A towel works for padding.

Other items will need to be secured, such as sail rig, lines, oars, etc...A good cover would take care of this, and padding with towels or seat cushions. The rigging line can also be used to tie things down.

I think we'll make what I call chocks, little pieces of wood that can hold saprs in place while in Road Mode. Herreshoff did this with the Amphicraft.

Got any ideas? Please post comments below.

Boat Cover Repair and Macrame Braid

 27 Apr 22:

Worked on the Penobscots cover to repair hurricane damage.

We got a piece of scrap Aqualon cover fabric to make an internal backer for damaged areas.

Sewed in the Aqualon first then put som scrap Sunbrella over the outer layer.

We bought this purpleheart seam rubber from The Artful Sailor, very handy.

Skipper bought some vintage macrame cord and I thought I see if it would work as a tiedown. It won't, too stretchy, but it will make good braided sail ties, soft and secure.

Video: https://youtu.be/Y7SpGizxeqU

The boat was on its dolly when the hurricane hit, we knew we'd get some tropical storm weather but not a strong Cat 1 hurricane with 8 feet of storm surge. We had lines tied through the webbing on the cover and the dolly was tied at the bow, and when all was done it was the cover that kept the boat from floating away. In the process the frot web strap was shredded, so that got replaced.

The transom wore through the cover during the storm. Repaired.

More new webbing.

She's ready for a short road trip, but basic Sunbrella is not good for trailering, the boat will wear through. SO we may invest in Aqualon Soft, which is more sturdy and has a soft polyester backing. It is not as breathable though, so vents would need to be added.

One more small patch.

Small Boat Rigging Tackle Box Repurposed

29 Apr 22:

We repurposed my Uncle's Plano tackle box, vintage 1970s. It makes a good spot to store rigging hardware and tools for the Armada. We added the stickers. The 900 mile ride in a PODS container added the red smear on the side, bottom paint from ZIP.

Nutshell Pram EXCUSE ME Gunwales

 25 Apr 22:

Plans call for a 5/8th inch wide by 1 inch tall, one piece gunwale, attached to the outside of the sheer plank. We decided to rip 3/8th inch strips and have both an outer and inner gunwale, to create a handhold. Ripped the pieces on a De WALT portable table saw.

Video: Nutshell Pram EXCUSE ME 25 Apr 22 Gunwales

We wanted to use a #10 screw because it had more meat on the screw, to hold the inner and outer gunwale together, but all we had were one inchers, and they stuck out a bit. We fixed that with a belt sander

Gunwales taking their position. The outers are full length, inners come up to either side of the cooler

DEWALT 20-Volt Max 2-Gallon Cordless Shop Wet/Dry Shop Vacuum

 25 Apr 22:

I looked everywhere for the batteries to the Porter Cable shop vac, but couldn't find them. So I surrendered and orders the DEWALT 20-Volt Max 2-Gallon Cordless Shop Wet/Dry Shop Vacuum, since we have alot of DeWalt batteries. It felt like it had a little les suction that the Porter Cable, possibly because the PC vac is 24 volts vs 20.

The next time I was in the shop I found the Porter Cable batteries.

Nutshell Pram EXCUSE ME 25 Apr 22 Quarter Knees

 25 Apr 22:

Bevel Tips Part 1:

Bevel Tips Part 2:

Marked and planed the bevels. Go slow and check often, it's hard to add wood back.

We chose to angle our knees up a bit more than plan.

Rounded the inner face edges with a De WALT Random Orbital sander before installation.

Attaching the knees with Frearson Head silicon bronze wood screws. Drilled a pilot hole and countersink firat with a Fuller Combination bit.
