Penobscot 14 ST. JACQUES Gunwale Repair

02 Apr 23:

So back to our regularly scheduled programming. I don't remember where we left off with ST. JACQUES, but he is in Lewis Boat Works to repair some hurricane rash.

And to get a refresh on the Pettit EZPoxy Sea Foam Green.

TETRIS was of course required to move EXCUSE ME over to the Sunfish Shack and open up a spot in Lewis Boat Works.

While boats were rolling around we rinsed off the Sunfish WAVE and gave ST. JACQUES a freshwater rinse of TILEX and water.

We  took a tracing to get the basic shape of a dutchman.

Transferred the outline to a piece of cypress with an awl, leaving excess for shaping.

Trimmed out loose bits of the damaged gunwale with a chisel, then focused on shaping the new piece to fit. I don't like carving on the boat piece, trying to keep as much original boat as possible. If the new piece gets messed up, we just start over on a new piece while the boat breathes easy. Shaping on this piece was done with a random orbital sander and stationary belt sander, tiny bits at a time.

New piece fastened with TotalBoat THIXO Flex, a thickened flexible epoxy adhesive. The thickened epoxy fills gaps and the flexible formula tolerates the small amount of movement between different woods.

Clamps Murray, Richard and Webb are helping.
