Line Whipping Kit

15 Jun 18:

We still whip the ends of lines to keep them from unraveling and to make them look neat. Searing synthetic line does not always guarantee that it will not unravel, especially some of the lines that have inner cores. Through the years we found it handy to keep everything in a dedicated line whipping kit, the kit is easy to grab and tote to wherever the line is and the kit is easy to store. The bag we use belonged to my Uncle, he was an aircraft mechanic in the Navy during World War II and enjoyed boating. He had several of these bags, one set up with electrical test and repair items, and we are reminded of him whenever we grab it.

The kit contains a lighter to sear ends of synthetic line, scissors, waxed whipping twine, an awl to free up knots, pliers to pull whip ends tight, and gaff tape to wrap line before whipping. Those items are stored in a gallon ziploc storage bag to keep them corralled inside the canvas bag. The canvas bag also contains odd bits of line, waiting for use on the next project.

Cheers!
