1965 Alcort Sunfish WAVE 10 Jan 21 First Coat Interlux Brightside Medium Blue

10 Jan 21:

Rolled and tipped the first coat of Interlux Brightside Medium Blue, used a Mighty Mini Roller kit from Jamestown Distributors and 2 inch Blue Hawk Sash brush for oil paints. Poured 1/3 quart of paint and thinned with 3 capfuls of Interlux 333 Brushing Liquid.

Hi Webb. Rolled a strip past the coaming to cover some rubbed areas. The paint should dry darker and blend, might continue and paint the entire deck, or Skipper is mulling over an idea to put a blood stripe chevron behind the coaming, tribute to riding out the storm and protecting the other boats.

Like it never happened :)

1965 Alcort Sunfish WAVE 24 Dec 20 Deck Fairing Round 2

 24 Dec 20:

Sanded the second coat of TotalFair fairing compound with 120 grit on a DeWALT random orbital sander. Smoothed out the TotalFair and also sanded away old, flaking one part paint in several areas, to get a good surface for primer to attach to. This photo shows the different layers of fiberglass, original blue gelcoat and 2 layers of Interlux Brightside Medium Blue.

The last coat of Interlux had some ridges, so we sanded those smooth, prep for primer.

Interlux Brightside Polyurethane Paint

04 Jun 18:

We painted WAVE about 4 years ago with Interlux Brightside Medium Blue, a polyurethane topside paint. We keep the boat covered when not in use and it is holding up great. We app;ied it with a foam roller and tipped it with a trim brush. The paint was thinned about 5% with a temp of around 75F.

Bud's new deck paint

Did final sanding on Bud's deck and taped off aluminum trim. Then we tied her down on the trailer and headed over to the inlaw's garage

The garage offers a bug free pine cone free paint environment

I used a mohair roller and foam brush to apply Interlux Brightside Medium Blue, all supplies from West Marine. It went on great, but an even smoother roller might work better, fewer bubbles? I'll try that next time but meanwhile this is my new favorite painting method

The first coat looks great (white streak is light reflection. It will dry to touch in 2-3 hours, and we'll decide tomorrow if we need coat 2

Rose"Bud"s deck paint prep

Worked on Bud's deck today to prep for paint. First I removed the bow handle. Take out 3 screws, loosen the 4th, turn handle a bit, put one screw back in to hold internal backer block in place. Otherwise on these older boats the block might drop off into the hull

From Sunfish Sailboat

Removed the halyard block and cleat. Remove one screw at a time , move block, reinstall screw. Taped up in prep for paint

From Sunfish Sailboat

This is the repaired area, it has been sanded and prepped for paint

I took out the old inspection port because it was cracking and yellowed by the sun. Saving the hardware but don't plan to use on the new port

From Sunfish Sailboat

Here is the hardware I removed. Jack's trick is to store all the small hardware in a Folgers' can, keeps it all in one place. And I think it has to be Folgers, no other brand

Test fit of bow handle, it's going to look good. Next step is to tape off the aluminum trim, sand the deck with 220 Sothe paint will stick, wipe down the deck with mineral spirits and get to painting! The deck is going to be Interlux Brightside's Medium Blue.
