1982 AMF Sunfish PHOENIX 12 Jan 21 TotalBoat Topside Primer and WetEdge Paint

12 Jan 21:

We sanded deck repairs on PHOENIX with 120 grit pads on a DeWALT 20V 5 inch random orbital sander, then applied a coat of TotalBoat Topside Primer with a Mighty Mini roller.

The primer dries in about 4 hours, so we took the time to apply a New Old Stock Sunfish sticker to the port side. Our friend Howie sent us the stickers about 10 years ago, he worked at Alcort 18 years then did 10 years of warranty work for AMF.

Once the primer dried we lightly sanded it with 120 grit, the brushed on a coat of TotalBoat WetEdge BlueGlo White.

1965 Alcort Sunfish WAVE 24 Dec 20 Deck Fairing Round 2

 24 Dec 20:

Sanded the second coat of TotalFair fairing compound with 120 grit on a DeWALT random orbital sander. Smoothed out the TotalFair and also sanded away old, flaking one part paint in several areas, to get a good surface for primer to attach to. This photo shows the different layers of fiberglass, original blue gelcoat and 2 layers of Interlux Brightside Medium Blue.

The last coat of Interlux had some ridges, so we sanded those smooth, prep for primer.

1965 Alcort Sunfish WAVE 25 Nov 19 TotalBoat Topside Primer

25 Nov 19:

Trimmed the strings and removed the paint sticks, sometimes bits get left behind in the epoxy. Those will get sanded off.

WAVE was moved outside on the finishing dolly for sanding with 60 grit on our random orbital sander, we used the French doors today.

Sanded the repair areas to get them flush. While I was sanding I found an area that I missed, so I made another blind hole patch for that.

WAVE is all different colors, which makes it harder to see areas that need to be faired, so we put on a "Show Coat" of primer, to show us where the hills and valleys are. We used TotalBoat Topside Primer applied with a Mighty Mini roller cover, all available from Jamestown Distributors.

She's mostly one color now!

1965 Alcort Sunfish WAVE 12 Jul 19 Repair Supplies

12 Jul 19:

Jamestown Distributors sent us some TotalBoat products for WAVE's repair, she needs a few things done. We are Ambassadors for the brand and get the supplies free, but before we came Ambassadors we happily paid for them. We have been happy with the products and especially Jamestown Distributors excellent Tech Team and website. We only put products on our boats that are going to last, and so far that has been experience. JD also sells other brands that we have enjoyed using in the past, Interlux and Pettit and also some RustOleum Topside.

Ding dong!

WAVE needs some fiberglass repairs, we will use THIXO (Thickened Epoxy) to bed the fiberglass cloth into a backer patch and build up repair areas.

The regular epoxy will be used to wet out the fiberglass cloth.

We have several old fiberglass repairs on the hull to clean up, once the fiberglass is repaired we will fair, prime and paint WetEdge BlueGlo White.

The other repair is internal, one of the foam blocks has come loose, we will reset it and fix it in place with flotation foam, it is a tenacious adhesive.

TotalBoat Topside Primer and WetEdge BluGlo White

08 May 19:

Jamestown Distributors sent us some TotalBoat Topside Primer and WetEdge BluGlo White for CHIP. We also go some roller covers, roller frame and an Arroworthy tip brush. That long roller frame would be good for painting bilges and getting bottom paint to those hard to reach spots. Plenty of free paint sticks and paint cups!

1963 Alcort Sunfish CHIP 19 Jan 19 TotalBoat THIXO and Elixir

19 Jan 19:

We received some free goodies from Jamestown Distributors to try out on CHIP. We will use the TotalBoat THIXO thickened epoxy to fasten the new plywood bottom, dispensed from a caulk gun to make the job go quick. JD also sent some of their new Elixir paint to try out, Fire Red for CHIP's hull, to be applied over the gray primer. I'm most excited about the soap and water cleanup for the paint! If the Elixir red is close to the brilliance that their WetEdge was, we have a winner. The cap and bag storage should help the leftover paint to last longer too. We also got some aluminum paint, in case we need to paint SCOUT again any time soon.

JD always adds free cups, stir sticks and latex gloves to the order, TotalBoat ships free in the US with a small surcharge sometimes for hazmat.

Alcort Super Sailfish ZSA ZSA 20 Dec 18 Fairing and Priming

20 Dec 18:

Removed the screws used to hold the trim on place while the epoxy dried. Mixed up some TotalBoat TotalFair to fill the screw holes.

The resin and hardener mix together to make a green compound. For today's application we used a syringe to inject the compound deep into the screw hole, then a spreader to lightly tip off the excess. We leave a little extra because the compound tends to suck into the hole as it dries and leave a dimple, necessitating a second application. The compound is easy to sand and dries fast, around 4 hours.

We have a little sanding to do, but while the fairing compound dried we applied the first coat of TotalBoat Topside Primer. We poured half of the primer out so we could mix up the solids that collect on the bottom of the can, then mixed it all back together. The primer was also strained, then applied with a Mighty Mini roller that came in an inexpensive kit from Jamestown Distributors

Alcort Super Sailfish ZSA ZSA 26 Nov 18 Hull Fairing

26 Nov 18:

Picked up the sheet, halyard, bridle and bow line from West Marine, New England Sta-Set.

Trimmed the bottom panel edge with a flush cut metal blade on a DeWalt multi oscillating tool, used the metal blade because I needed the flush cut. Trimmed it as close as I dared then finished with a Stanley #5 jack plane and light passes with a Black and Decker belt sander. Sanded the fairing compound with 60 grit on a DeWalt random orbital sander

The rub strip is rotten in one spot so we will scarf in a new strip. We started by cutting out the bad part, eyeballed a 45 degree cut and made it with the oscillating tool. The bow is to the left, so we angled the forward end of the scarf so it would overlap aft....

...and angled the aft scarf so the rub strip will overlay it.

Peekaboo.

The wooden Sailfish and Sunfish have a stainless rub strip that wraps from the tab on the bow handle, around the stem and aft 18 inches. Speaking of bow handle, it is different than the fiberglass boats that do not have the tab, or the keel strip. We used the rub strip off of our wooden Sunfish CHIP as a guide, ZSA ZSA's was missing so we need to order a new piece of 1/2 inch, half oval strip. To fit the metal rub strip with used a 3/4 inch long handle hand chisel to bevel down the wooden keel strip, and cleaned that up with the jack plane.

Sanded with 60 grit and ready for primer.

We applied TotalBoat Topside Primer, rolled the bottom with a Mighty Mini Roller kit and brushed the sides with a Redtree Fooler chip brush.
