1980 Drascombe Lugger MKII ONKAHYE Floorboard Repurpose

 29 Aug 21:

Capn Jack replaced ONKAHYE's floorboards with pine back in the late 1980s,  and we replaced them with cypress a few years back. For a while we repurposed the old floorboards to be a trailer deck, and we almost lost them in a storm last year. Today we put on a coat of varnish, and the plan is to use them inside the home as a hat and coat rack. Minwax Helmsman was one of Capn Jack's favorite polyurethane varnishes.

1-22 more coats may needed.

1963 Alcort Sunfish CHIP 24 Feb 21 Deck Edge Repair and Floorboards

24 Feb 21:

CHIP got banged up a little during Hurricane Sally, some chips along the deck edge and one floorboard washed away. We filled in the divots with TotalBoat THIXO thickened epoxy dispensed from a 18:1 High Thrust caulk gun and smoothed it out as best we could with a plastic spreader, hoping to minimize sanding.

The wooden Sunfish have floorboards, we cut a new one from 1/4 inch marine grade plywood for CHIP, painted it with TotalBoat WetEdge BlueGlo White and coated the top with TotalTread non skid. The test fit was today and everything fits perfect.

1963 Alcort Sunfish CHIP 28 Jun 19 Rigging

28 Jun 19:

Had some clean up items over the last few weeks getting CHIP ready for Sea Trials. Painted the trim with TotalBoat WetEdge BluGlo White and Interlux Brightside Largo BLue.

Attached the coaming.

Yankee Driver.

Bridle.

Reassembled rudder.

Halyard cleat on the wooden boats is on the mast collar.

Used 1953 Alcort Sunfish ZIP's floorboard as a template.

Found out that the 2nd Gen wooden boat cockpits are actually a little shorter, so we had to measure and recut floorboards.

Used Grandpa Nelson's ratchting brace bit to auger the finger holes.

Cut floorboard cleats.

Drascombe Dabber VICTORY 14 Dec 17 Float Test, Floorboard and Forward Seat

14 Dec 17:

Trimmed the middle cleat to clear the centreplate case flange with a circular saw.

Cut the forward seat to width and beveled the edges to fit with a circular saw.

Trimmed the transom cap to fit with a belt sander, 60 grit and a random orbital sander.

Float test, small leak forward of the keel strip, appears to be coming from a stem strip screw hole.

Cut handles for the floorboards, centered them so the floorboard would be balanced when we have to carry them.

Marked a hole big enough for 4 fingers wearing a glove. Drilled pilot hole for the jigsaw blade.

Cut the hole with a jigsaw.

Made a pattern to send to a friend.

Drascombe Dabber VICTORY 17 Nov 17 New Floor

17 Nov 17:

Stepped the main and mizzen mast, they are in good enough shape to be saved. Stays are in good shape as well as the halyards.

Picked up some cumaru Peruvian teak for the floor, started cutting out new slats.

Tips for the Lugger and Dabber floor - sole -

-1x6 deck boards work great. They are actually 5 1/2 inches wide, which leaves a nice gap between boards. Some also already have radiused edges, saves time.
-Use the old floorboards as a pattern for width spacing, cleat spacing and shape.
-Put a wide board on the outside slat and work inboard, where you will have the shorter, narrow center boards.

Wooden Sunfish Floorboards

19 Oct 2014: Here are some details on floorboards for a wooden Sunfish, which are used to keep sailors from stepping directly onto the 1/4 inch hull. There are 2 floorboards, they are 1/4 inch plywood, and they should have non-skid on the surface. The keel runs through the middle and there is a 3/4 inch lip around the inside the cockpit that supports the floorboards.

From SBR 4: Jun 2014 -

The floorboards are cut to shape for the port and starboard side, with two finger holes. There is also a support cleat on the bottom side close to the finger holes that nestles just inside the outer support frame and keeps the boards from sliding. In later model wooden Sunfish there would also be a hole cut out to access the self bailer.

From SBR 4: Jun 2014 -

There are small cleats on the fore and aft keel that captures the inboard corners of the floorboards.
