Our 1982 Olympic schemed Sunfish named PHOENIX helped us celebrate the 4th, along with our Pelican Icon kayak named CLARK. The Admiral took out PHOENIX first, to see if my post hurricane bow replacement was still seaworthy. She tried to trick me into going first, but I didn't fall for that. 

The locals looked on with disinterest.

Sea Retrials successfully completed, the bow remained attached so the Admiral gave me the tiller and sheet for a bit.

Sunfish Cover Repair Complete

Well this was a multi phase repair project but the cover is back in action on PHOENIX. We also added a second V-Brace to the handle to augment the V-Brace on the tongue, this should help keep the bow under control when dollying or trailering. For those who have to bump over rocks, roots, small farm animals, etc... it helps to run a bow line from the bow handle to tie down the bow to the dolly.

Dynamic offers two dolly styles for the Sunfish, this one is for the non-gunwale hung boats with the metal deck edge trim dating 1960-1987. The other style is for Sunfish built 1988-present, it has a special fitting on the bow tube that slips under the rolled edge gunwale.

Dynamic Dolly for Sunfish

Some of the features of the dollies we use for our Sunfish, made by Dynamic Dollies and Racks in Portsmouth, RI. The nose cup fits the 1988 and newer boats with the rolled edge, we use the V support on the tongue to center the keel on our older boats and are trying out a tip to tie the bow off to the tiedown eyelet.

We use Dynamic Dollies for all of our small boats, primarily for the Sunfish. We have the older Sunfish with the aluminum trim and straight deck/hull flange, and the dollies have the bow support designed for the rolled edge Sunfish 1988 and newer. A question came up on the Yahoo Sunfish_Sailors group recently on how to keep the Sunfish bow up on the support, so we called Dynamic and asked them. We let our keels rest on the tongue mounted V support, and hadn't paid much attention to the bow support. Dynamic suggested using a small line to tie the bow to the tiedown eyelet. We tried it out and that works great, but it might interfere with our covers. We'll try it out for a bit and see which way we prefer.

Boat On A Dolly On A Trailer

Took some pictures for a dolly article for Small Boats Monthly, one concept was using the dolly to carry our boat on the trailer. The boat rides nice in the sling and it was not too difficult to roll the tongue of the trailer up the keel rollers. The axle rests firmly on the bunks. This rig might be an option for those who have multiple small boats, easier than changing bunks around. It is also easier than maneuvering a boat off of the dolly and up onto the bunks, and reversing for the offload.

St. Jacques Log 26 May 17 Sea Trials

26 May 17:

Launched St. Jacques for sea trials. Crew of 4. Her paddle and oar systems were checked, as well as trim, weight and balance. She floated on her waterline and moved with ease. Dry bilge. She also fit perfect on the Sunfish Dolly from Dynamic Dollies and Racks.

Now she is back to the boat works for finish coat of paint, rig for sprit sail and final outfitting.
