TotalBoat from Jamestown Distributors

 01 Jun 23:

We have spent over a decade with the Jamestown Distributors Tech Team, ordering a variety of supplies through the years and along that trail we started using several of their in-house TotalBoat Products. We bought a lot of THIXO thickened epoxy adhesive, epoxy resin, hardeners, fillers, WetEdge paint, primer and our favorite, TotalFair fairing compound. They also have polyester resin systems. We shared photos with the team of our restoration process, and now we mutually support each other and share information on products we like. As Ambassadors for 7 years now, we have a new custom link to the TotalBoat webstore, which if you care to use it offers a 5% discount on items purchased. And as always free shipping.

Here's an adhesive we like, THIXO Wood. I smiled when I saw our photo on the website, from a deck repair we did to our 1953 wooden Alcort Sunfish ZIP. The THIXO (thickened epoxy adhesive) dispensed from a cartridge takes out all of our guessing of mixing the right amount of resin, hardener and filler, and the mixing tip does the mixing for us. Also less time exposed to a cloud of filler dust. Leave the tip opening small for a small bead or cut the tip back a bit for a wider opening and let her rip! Once finished, just leave the tip on the cartridge or replace the cap, THIXO stores well, and when it's time for the next paste party put on a new tip and have fun.

PS: Speaking of paste, Skipper LOVES to paste. If she is nearby I better offer the pasting honors to the little pirate first. If I don't, I won't be walking the plank, I'll be running and screaming off of the end of it.

Did we mention free shipping on TotalBoat products? And you may or may not know of all of the other products that Jamestown Distributors sells, we've bought a little of everything from them. Another favorite for our shop are the Redtree Fooler brushes. JD ships fast with nice cardboard packaging, that we reuse for a variety of things, like backers for internal fiberglass patches on Sunfish or templates around the shop.

We're always happy to answer questions in the comment section and hear about your favorite tips.

Fair Winds,

Clark and Skipper

BS 1088 Ocume Plywood + Epoxy Coating = No Checking

 17 Apr 22:

We used high grade BS1088 Okoume plywood on our Penobscot plus a couple of coats of epoxy, before coating with primer and paint, or varnish. After 5 years there is no checking. ANd she's been through several tropical storms and a hurricane!

Nutshell Pram EXCUSE ME Bottom Garboard Seam

 15 Feb 22:

Cold outside today, in the 40s, so we set up a little space heater under the hull for a few hours to help dry the epoxy. The heat rising raised the hull temp enough to keep the cure going on the epoxy.

One step today was to start filling holes where temporary fasteners had been removed. To do this we filled a syringe with THIXO thickened epoxy and cut the tip to a size just a bit smaller than the old screw holes, then injected small amounts of epoxy.

We planed the lower edge of the garboard flush to the bottom panel with a hand plane, then finished off the seam with 120 grit discs on a DeWALT 20V random orbital sander. One seam had some voids where we didn't get the epoxy in the right spot, so we injected more epoxy into that seam and clamped it again with deck screws, fender washers and PVC foamboard backer blocks.

A few of the screws were named for friends and family.

1953 Alcort Sunfish ZIP 14 Jun 20 Sand Paint and Epoxy Trim and Deck

14 Jun 20:

We used the new DeWALT 20V Brushless Random Orbital Sander to sand the rub rail, coaming, coaming backer and daggerboard with 120 grit discs. The sander did all of those bits on one 4ah battery.

Painted the rub rail and coaming backer strip with TotalBoat Wet Edge Fire Red. Applied a coat of West Systems 105 Epoxy Resin/207 Special Clear Hardener to the coamings and a second coat to the deck (but not the patch.)

West Systems sells the best closed cell foam roller cover to use with their epoxies, it is guaranteed to apply a thin coat and not melt and shed foam all over the work surface.

Fresh coat of epoxy on the mast collar also.
