1963 Alcort Sunfish CHIP 25 Apr 21 Deck Primer

25 Apr 21:

Scuffed CHIP's deck with 120 grit on a DeWALT Random Orbital Sander in prep for primer coat of TotalBoat Topside Primer and finish coats of TotalBoat WetEdge Blue Glo White.

Rolled the primer as thin as we could.

First coat of Blue Glo White.

1963 Alcort Sunfish CHIP 29 Jan 21 Floorboard

 29 Jan 21:

One of CHIP's floorboards went missing in Hurricane Sally surge, the other floated 300 feet up to the Carriage House, so we cut a new floorboard out of 1/4 inch marine grade plywood.

There is a small wooden cleat on the bottom that helps keep the floorboard from moving around. A note about floorboards, they can float away after a capsize, so dummy cords might be a good addition.

The cleats are cypress, fastened with #8 x 1 inch silicone bronze Frearson Head screws, piloted and countersunk with combination Fuller bits. Bits and screws available from Jamestown Distributors.

Used Skipper's ratcheting bit brace and auger bits to drill the finger holes, the bit brace was her Grandpa Nelson's.

Both floorboards got a coating of TotalBoat WetEdge BlueGlo White with a Redtree Fooler double bristle Brush (also available from JD). During Sea Trials I found that the coating is slippery, so we will apply a coat to TotalTread once the base coat dries

1982 AMF Sunfish PHOENIX 12 Jan 21 TotalBoat Topside Primer and WetEdge Paint

12 Jan 21:

We sanded deck repairs on PHOENIX with 120 grit pads on a DeWALT 20V 5 inch random orbital sander, then applied a coat of TotalBoat Topside Primer with a Mighty Mini roller.

The primer dries in about 4 hours, so we took the time to apply a New Old Stock Sunfish sticker to the port side. Our friend Howie sent us the stickers about 10 years ago, he worked at Alcort 18 years then did 10 years of warranty work for AMF.

Once the primer dried we lightly sanded it with 120 grit, the brushed on a coat of TotalBoat WetEdge BlueGlo White.

1965 Alcort Sunfish WAVE 04 Mar 20 Third Coat TotalBoat WetEdge

04 Mar 20:

Scuffed the second coat of paint with 120 grit sandpaper. Wiped off the dust with a towel. The scuffs help see where we need to put the next coat down.

Slapped some paint on Skipper's 1965 Alcort Sunfish WAVE, rolled and tipped the third (and final) coat of TotalBoat WetEdge BlueGlo White.

1971 O'Day Day Sailer II CYANE 23 Nov 19 WetEdge Paint Check

23 Nov 19:

We painted CYANE in the Spring with TotalBoat WetEdge Oyster White, gave her a rinse today and the paint is holding up well to sun, dirt and grime. She spent about 3 months out on the boat lift, direct sun, saltwater environment and several months on the driveway.

1963 Alcort Sunfish CHIP 27 May 19 Bottom Paint Graphics

27 May 19:

Rolled CHIP outside for a bit because we can, and run some 120 grit over the primer.

Okay, in the daggerboard slot there was epoxy squeeze out and overlap from the new bottom panels. So we trimmed the bulk of it our with the DeWalt jigsaw, just carefully ran the blade flush along the inside of the trunk. Then shaped the curved ends of the slot with a ceramic tile file that has a half round side on it.

Penciled in the lines for the paint design, circa August 1949 LIFE Magazine.

Painted the boaw and stern with WetEdge Flag Blue. It went on smooth and covered well, but it is too dark to match the sail we are going to use.

First coat of TotalBoat WetEdge BluGlo White, brushed on with an angled sash brush. Thinned 5%.

Found a better color blue, Interlux Brightside Largo Blue, thinned 5% and brushed on.

TotalBoat Topside Primer and WetEdge BluGlo White

08 May 19:

Jamestown Distributors sent us some TotalBoat Topside Primer and WetEdge BluGlo White for CHIP. We also go some roller covers, roller frame and an Arroworthy tip brush. That long roller frame would be good for painting bilges and getting bottom paint to those hard to reach spots. Plenty of free paint sticks and paint cups!

1963 Alcort Sunfish CHIP 19 Jan 19 TotalBoat THIXO and Elixir

19 Jan 19:

We received some free goodies from Jamestown Distributors to try out on CHIP. We will use the TotalBoat THIXO thickened epoxy to fasten the new plywood bottom, dispensed from a caulk gun to make the job go quick. JD also sent some of their new Elixir paint to try out, Fire Red for CHIP's hull, to be applied over the gray primer. I'm most excited about the soap and water cleanup for the paint! If the Elixir red is close to the brilliance that their WetEdge was, we have a winner. The cap and bag storage should help the leftover paint to last longer too. We also got some aluminum paint, in case we need to paint SCOUT again any time soon.

JD always adds free cups, stir sticks and latex gloves to the order, TotalBoat ships free in the US with a small surcharge sometimes for hazmat.

Alcort Super Sailfish ZSA ZSA 25 Dec 18 Hull Graphics and Varnish

25 Dec 18:

The stockings were raided, dinner finished and still a few hours left before sunset, so we rolled ZSA ZSA out to Skipper's boat hoist and flipped her.

Drew the arcs for the graphics on each corner of the hull. Extremely technical, only a few folks are qualified to do this step.

Applied a coat of TotalBoat WetEdge Fire Red with a 2 inch angled sash brush from Lowes. Skipper likes the short handle of the sash, it is lighter and easier to maneuver in tight spots. Taped along the seam with blue tape and free handed the arc.

I was thinking that the HEUER GARAGE sign should really be JACK'S BOATYARD, but he was not responsible for the acquisition of ZSA ZSA, that responsibility rests on Clark and Skipper. Jack was only responsible for ONKAHYE, CYANE, WAVE, MADISON, PHOENIX, SCOUT and LEWIS. SUGAR 2 to some extent.

First coat of TotalBoat Halcyon Amber Gloss on the blades and mast collar.

Merry Christmas!
