1974 Catalina 22 GOSHAWK Summer 1994 Naval Air Station Corpus Christi TX Marina

10 Apr 20:

From the 1994 files, just back from a day sail on Corpus Christi Bay with our 1974 Catalina 22 GOSHAWK, got buzzed by dolphins. GOSHAWK was a fun boat, swing keel, pop top, plenty of room for 4 people, nice cabin with setee. Comfortable to sail and easy to work the rig.

The pop top was versatile, the cabin hatch could slide forward or the entire section could swivel up and froward on 4 arms, which created enough head room to stand in the cabin. (Sailing Texas image below).

We sailed GOSHAWK from the Navy marina for a while, to and from downtown Corpus and out to Mustang Island. Then we trailer-sailed her for a bit, played around in the Intercoastal and raided Snoopy's on Padre Island a time or two. Also launched from the downtown L-Head.

10 Apr 20:

Came across a few photos from ONKAHYE's Corpus Christi days. We liked to launch downtown at the L-Head ramp, the ramp location has since been moved. Some days we never left the breakwater, other days ONKAHYE would romp in the bay.

Skipper would tend to the boat while I drove the truck. She'd get ONKAHYE spun around and pointed out. If other folks were launching she'd walk ONKAHYE down to the end of the pier and move her around the end, to be clear of other folks who preferred the same side of the ramp.

Once the truck and trailer were parked we'd send out the bumkin, ship the rudder and drop the centerboard a bit. Then Skipper would get ONKAHYE a little walking start, step aboard and unfurl the jib. We'd crawl away for the dock on some jib while the main went up, and we'd be off sailing.

Log of ONKAHYE.

Corpus Christi Texas Sunfish 1996

05 Mar 20:

Skipper's parents were the main enablers for our Sunfish restoration adventures, they restored several boats in Corpus Christi, TX. Skipper took sailing in College and developed her fondness for the Sunfish, and a few years later she was given a Sunfish from her Aunt Pat, 1965 Alcort Sunfish WAVE. That started an avalanche of boats, 1982 AMF Sunfish PHOENIX showed up soon after, then 1981 AMF Sunfish MADISON at one point. Plus 2-3 other Sunfish that they restored and passed on to new owners, and one that travelled to Jacksonville. They also had their Capri 18 HUI for a bit, she was a fine sailer, but took a few more minutes to rig and launch than the Sunfish. One of the boats had a nice vintage 5 panel sail, those were phased out in the 1970s but they are good sails if you come across one.

They also scored the nice 1984 Riviera Sunset sail that we use on WAVE.
