Sea Village of Rescue, VA

30 Apr 26:

Nearby sea village of Rescue, where the deadrise workboats brin in crab or oysters during the season. Situated on Jones Creek, with a short run to the Pagan River (Formerly Warrakoyack) and then out into the James River. Locals have been working these waters for several thousand years.

The Rescue, Virginia, post office (ZIP code 23424) opened on October 21, 1889

Fixer Upper. It was pretty under the vinyl siding.

Being quietly historic and ignored, the original chunk on the port side of the Battery Park in the trading town of Patesfield dates to the 1680s. A light was lit from the upper floor to help mariners navigate the entrance intp Pagan Creek.

Armed Schooner PATRIOT of the American Revolution

29 Apr 26:

Near the Mariner's Museum in Newport News is this plaque with information on the armed schooner PATRIOT. She was campaigned valiantly by Lt James Watkins and Pilot Cesar Tarrant, but was captured by the British. Her fate was better than most of the Virginia State Navy.

PATRIOT's Pilot was an enslaved African American named Cesar Tarrant, he skillfully steered the boat through many campaigns, including the close quarters battle depicted below. He eventually gained freedom and land bounty's after the war.

There is a new observation pier being built where the plaque used to be, we will check in to make sure it gets placed in a new spot once the construction is complete.

It's fun to think about this river being traversed by ships of the Royal Navy and "sharp actions" with the Patriot's small maritime forces.

Shirley Hogge Maritime Artist

 26 Apr 26:

Hampton Roads maritime artist Shirley Hogge painted this scene of the steamboat ISLE of WIGHT departing Pagan Creek in Smithfield, VA. There are the peanut factories and warehouses on Wharf Hill in the background and an intriguing bowsprit of a skipjack in the foreground. Wof course are most interested in the small boats that ISLE of WIGHT carries.

Blackwater River

25 Apr 26:

Once navigable by steamboat and small craft, the Blackwater River on the western side of our county is now hindered by deadfall and silting, so bring your saw and a bucket. These waterways kept export and import flowing for the Patriots, as the British maritime forces were not geared up for inland operations. Once the farm truck arrived on the scene, the government shut down programs to keep the waterway clear.

Hampton Roads Steamboats

24 Apr 26:

Maybe these will make a comeback, take a trip from Newport News to Richmond, enjoy a ham sandwich and lemonade, read the paper. Many boats had a day cabin. We of course are keenly interested in the yawls that they carried for ship to shore ops and marking channels.

W. L. Fuller Countersink Bit Set

 22 Apr 26:

We use these bits a lot on our wooden boats along with silicone bronze wood screws from Fairwinds Fasteners.

"The Fuller #8 Countersink Set contains five type C countersinks for wood screw sizes #6, 8, 10, 12, and 14 with 3/8" and 1/2" cutting diameters. Five matching taper point drills, 3/8" and 1/2" stop collars, 3/8" and 1/2" plug cutters, and two hex keys are all included in a really nice-looking mahogany case.
Fuller countersinks will last a lifetime if taken care of. The number 8 is our most popular set, favored by wooden boat builders, woodworkers, and other craftsmen."

Skipper Soaking a Bahamas Dinghy

 17 Apr 26:

The little Bahamas Dinghy was pretty dry after being laid up 40+ years, so we bought her a pool. The wood did swell a bit, some seams closed up but not all. Meanwhile Skipper had fun.

Mobjack Bay Aerial Recon

 14 Apr 26:

We've heard that Mobjack Bay Virginia is a beautiful place to sail, and it certainly looked inviting when I flew past it today. Lots of nooks and crannies to explore, or open water into Hampton Roads to the south.

In case you're wondering about the flight path, we were practicing maneuvers for my upcoming flight review...stalls, slow flight, steep turns etc...

Isle of Wight County VA Waterways

 09 Apr 26:

Isle of Wight County has an extensive maritime history, bordered by the James River to the East, Chuckatuck Creek to the South, and the  Blackwater River on the inland border. Plus we can add in Batten Bay, Lawnes Creek and the Pagan Creek. The focus was to export agriculture, livestock and timber.

The invention of the gasoline motor, farm truck and a four mile bridge across the James took the wind out of most of our maritime activities.

Skipper and Clamps

 07 Apr 26:

Clamps...you'll need lots of them. These spring clamps are great to hold the deck edge secure while adhesive cures, and Skipper skippervises. These particular clamps had a previous life with Howie in Waterbury, who worked for Alcort and AMF, we are honored to have them.

Skipper & EXCUSE ME

06 Apr 26:

Skipper doing her best to maneuver our Nutshell Pram EXCUSE ME during Sea Trials, despite my poor rigging of the bridle...actually no rigging, I forgot to shackle the sheet to the bridle. She had limited control and made it work, willing the boom into submission and returning safely to shore.

YouTubeLive with Skipper and Clark - The Virginia State Navy and Isle of Wight County Mariners

 05 Apr 26:

We are starting up YouTube livestreams for the Historical Society to help engage our distant members. Can you help spread the word of our next event?

The Virginia State Navy and Isle of Wight County Mariners
April 11, 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM

Join us virtually for a YouTube live presentation on the Virginia State Navy and Isle of Wight County Mariners: During the American Revolution, the Virginia State Navy—whose vessels were often called “Virginia Boats”—played a vital defensive role along the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries, drawing heavily on the maritime skill of mariners from Isle of Wight County and the lower James River region. These locally built craft were typically shallow‑draft galleys, sloops, and armed schooners designed for Virginia’s narrow rivers and creeks, allowing them to maneuver where larger British warships could not.
Isle of Wight County sailors, experienced in coastal trade and river navigation, crewed these vessels and used their intimate knowledge of local waterways to protect commerce, convoy supplies, and harass British forces. Together, the Virginia Boats, their Captains and Crew exemplified how local shipbuilding traditions and adaptive naval tactics supported revolutionary resistance on the water.
Maritime Historians Audrey and Kent Lewis are sailors, wooden‑boat builders and small‑boat restoration specialists whose work is dedicated to preserving and interpreting traditional small craft. As contributing authors to WoodenBoat magazine and Small Boats Nation, their historical research places small boats within their regional, economic, and social contexts, highlighting the often‑overlooked builders and mariners. Audrey and Kent advocate for small wooden boats as forms of living history, that carry forward the sea stories of our ancestral mariners.
