Every dinghy needs a Skipper, and my Skipper always wants a paddle. Fortunately our friend Helen sent along a paddle with the dinghy. I sanded the old flaky finish off with 120 grit pads on a DeWALT 20V random orbital sander, and also reshaped the end of the blade, which had a big chunk missing.
We wiped off sanding dust with mineral spirits, which showed us some open end grain on the tip of the blade. The plan is to work some adhesive into those small cracks to keep water out. We'll also varnish the paddle, except for the handle, and eventually pint the tip with a light accent color(s) that match the dinghy paint.
