Sunfish Hull Vent

13 Jul 20:

The pontoon hull of the Sunfish had a hole drilled in it to act as a vent, in case the hull heated up in the hot sun, the sir had a place to escape versus popping a seam.

Wooden boats had a small hole, around 1/8th inch, under the Serial Number plate.

1960s era boat had the hole drilled right through the Serial Number plate on the deck.

Once AMF took over in the late 60s some holes were drilled under Serial Number stickers on the deck.

Starting around 1972, when the Hull Identification Number (HIN) was placed on the transom the hole was drilled on the upper part of the forward cockpit bulkhead.

So if you see these holes, don't plug them up. Don't flood them with water for long period either, a lot of hulls get waterlogged if the cockpit fills up from rain and water gets inside through the cockpit hole.
