One of the few old things that did not arrive here by boat...332 miles West from Smithfield VA, in Chilhowie, VA, in 1890, George Palmer founded the Virginia Paving and Sewer Pipe Company; primarily a brick manufacturing plant, using the same clay as the earlier pottery factory. Paving bricks made there were shipped across the country. The company operated until 1910.
-"Chihowie" is said to come from the Cherokee word for Valley of Many Deer.
-Chilhowie is cited as a starting point for longhunters in the early 1700s. Skipper has a few of those in her family, including one who was a sharpshooter with Morgan's Rifles during the American Revolution. And now you know where her Loyalist or Patriot allegiance lies.
