Backyard building is a good way to learn woodworking skills. One of the first things to learn is how to measure and mark dimensional lumber. Lumber off the rack may not be square on the ends and it helps to know if a cut line is to be cut on the line, or to the left or right of the marked line. We use a Sharpie to mark the "Cut line" and the width of the Sharpie mark matches up pretty well with the kerf (width) of the saw blade.

One of our possible future business names is Sharpie Marine Construction. We're not talking fine dovetail joinery here, but I bet our creations would hold up longer in a blow than some glossy piece of furniture. "Hell for stout" as Capn Jack would say.
