We wrote a review on TotalBoat's Halcyon Rugged Amber Gloss Varnish for Small Boats Magazine, Halcyon is an easy to use water based coating. It works great for our wood bits that do not have continual sun exposure. In the article photos there were only 2 coats of varnish on the daggerboard and the varnish still had a bit more leveling to do. Outside air temp was 50F. Plus we had not done very much prep to get the board smooth or sealed the wood before applying varnish. Here's a photo after the 2 coats of varnish a week later.
We want workboat finishes on our wood bits, because it is easy to maintain but primarily because we still want a little non slip finish on seats, gunwales, tillers and blades. We were curious though, as to how smooth and shiny we could get one side of the daggerboard. Don't worry, the other side is still just 2 coats. We sanded lightly with 220 grit and applied 6 more coats, all coats applied an hour apart. Cleaned the brush with water in Skipper's kitchen sink between coats.
Might sand this side smooth and apply 2 more coats...please stand by...
