Old School Dutchman or Seam Sealant

 20 Jan 21:

When we restored the 1880s Mississippi River Skiff we found some old school sealant in the garboard seams, strips of duck cloth bedded in thickened paint. We have heard that referred to as dutchman, but that term also refers to wood patches/gravings. 136 years later some of the seam was still watertight, when Skipper was rinsing muck off of BARBASHELA's hull small puddles of water formed along the inner edge of the starboard garboard seam, looking for a way out.

My favorite photo of Skipper by the way...

Here's a chunk of BARBASHELA's port side garboard, it shows a good cross section of the plank, paint and cloth and also the square nail nailing pattern. And a 19th century square nail.

Pretty amazing, the sealant has pried the wood apart.
