Driver Depot

 07 Jan 22:

You'll have to excuse our other 2 fascinations for a minute, railroads and antique archaeology. We knew when we moved to the Tidewater Region of Virginia that we'd be walking that same trails that Skipper's ancestors trod from from 1609 until the late 1700s. We did not know that a nearby town bears a family name, Driver, and that there was an old depot there. Reading up on some local history we were excited to learn that the old Driver depot had been repurposed into a Feed and Seed store at some point.

We found images on Google maps but unfortunately, further sleuthing turned up that the depot had been bulldozed by a developer only weeks prior. We went over to check out the old site, the old Seaboard rail lines are being repurposed into a hike and bike trail, so that is some consolation.

So what interests us about railroad depots is that we think they would make a nice boat shop. They usually have lots of windows, high ceilings, large freight doors, shaded docks and large spaces inside with high ceilings. Usually well built. The West Florida Railroad Museum in Milton Florida is another example.

Maybe one day we'll find one to repurpose or build our own.
