We cut out the shape for the paddles with a jigsaw. (This can also be done after the concave shape on the face of the blade is cut).
Then we used our Stanley #51 spokeshave to begin shaping the shaft of the paddle, which will be oval near the blade.
When I was finished I stole Skipper's little broom and dust pan for shop cleanup.
